In 1985, Yunnan Tea Research Institute find one tea tree is purple in 60 million tea trees forest. The tea buds are purple the leaves are purple and the stems are purple too.
They made some green tea with those purple tea leaves. They find the tea water turn to slightly purple with a nice flavor and aroma. They named this tea tree, Zi Juan.
 
Tea scientists start to cultivate vegetative reproduction this rare cultivation. The research shows Zi Juan carries a lot of Anthocyanidin like 天竺葵素pelargonidin、矢车菊素cyanidin、飞燕草色素delphinidin、芍药色素 peonidin和锦葵色素malvidin等.
